{"id":1868,"date":"2020-06-30T12:00:06","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T11:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/?p=1868"},"modified":"2024-09-03T14:40:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T13:40:28","slug":"hdpe-low-cost-functional-polymer-for-injection-moulding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/material-of-the-month\/hdpe-low-cost-functional-polymer-for-injection-moulding\/","title":{"rendered":"HDPE: Functional polymer for injection moulding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FUNCTIONAL AND ECONOMICAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>HDPE, otherwise known as High Density Polyethylene, is this month\u2019s material of the month.\u00a0 Often regarded the \u201ccheap and cheerful\u201d thermoplastic polymer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/what-we-do\/moulding\/plastic-injection-moulding\/\">plastic injection moulding<\/a>, like all materials, it definitely has its place.<\/p>\n<p>For one of our customers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imi-precision.com\/uk\/en\">IMI Webber<\/a>, it was the ideal choice for their specialist, overmoulded, sintered filter.\u00a0 Its excellent chemical resistance properties made it the best material choice for the automotive environment.\u00a0 Part of a pneumatic manifold for a 4&#215;4 suspension system, High Density Polyethylene is the perfect candidate and surpassed all other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/what-we-do\/design\/design-for-manufacture\/\">material options<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A thermoplastic polymer and member of the Polyethylene family, HDPE is produced from the monomer ethylene. are supplied in HDPE containers)<\/li>\n<li>Recyclable<\/li>\n<li>Food grades available<\/li>\n<li>Can be heat welded (gas pipes)Doesn\u2019t leach into food and water, containers etc<\/li>\n<li>Rigidity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons of HDPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High thermal expansion<\/li>\n<li>Poor UV resistance (additives available)<\/li>\n<li>Subject to stress cracking<\/li>\n<li>Difficult to bond (glues)<\/li>\n<li>Flammable<\/li>\n<li>Can look cheap<\/li>\n<li>Poor temperature capability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Did you know?\u00a0 <\/strong>HDPE is
