Have you considered reshoring critical component manufacture in the last 6 months?\u00a0 Here are 5 key questions that will definitely need answering:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s your main objective?<\/strong> Do you need to reduce cost, reduce risk or improve quality?<\/h3>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0It is probably all three but put them in order to help you select a new UK supplier.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Are you comparing costs correctly?<\/strong> Even if individual products cost more in the UK, the cumulative cost of shipping, transport, insurance, lost production days and the overhead of large orders stuck in-transit \u2013 at sea for weeks \u2013 is eye watering.<\/h3>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Take another look at your Total Purchase Price (TPP).<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who owns the assets?<\/strong> Is your tool register up to date? If you don\u2019t own the tooling, you can\u2019t move it \u2013 check with your supplier.\u00a0 It may state in the small print that your overseas suppliers have not sold the whole tool.<\/h3>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Be considerate to the current supplier to improve your chances of buying the tools. In many countries you have limited legal rights and you don\u2019t want to rock the boat unnecessarily, approach with caution.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is there a UK alternative?<\/strong>\u00a0If you need a specialist manufacturing process, first check if there is a supplier locally with the specific capabilities. If not, with government supporting UK manufacturing, now is the time for a collaborative approach.<\/h3>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Once you find a supplier, you\u2019ll need drawings, specifications and part weights to hand.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is now the right time?<\/strong> With COVID and Brexit impacting the demand for your products, you might need supply to be flexible, fluctuating at short notice to meet the changes. Is your current supplier able to adapt with you?<\/h3>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>There has never been a better time to approach your suppliers and see how they can help you to navigate the challenges.<\/p>\n
