HDPE, or High-Density Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer renowned for being tough, cheap, and versatile. Due to these and other benefits, it is one of the most popular manufacturing plastics, accordingly over 30 million tonnes of HDPE are bought and sold around the globe every year. HDPE can be blow moulded, compression moulded, and injection moulded.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can be made from HDPE?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At BEC Group plastic injection moulding HDPE is used to make everything from bath toys, food containers and household goods. HDPE can also be used in the manufacture of filters \u2013 we used it for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessmagnet.co.uk\/company\/imiwebberltd-105659.htm\">IMI Webber \u2018s <\/a>specialist over-moulded sintered filter.\u00a0Its excellent chemical resistance properties made it the best material choice for the automotive environment. Part of a pneumatic manifold for a 4\u00d74 suspension system, HDPE is comparatively a good materials candidate for this project and surpassed all other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/what-we-do\/design\/design-for-manufacture\/\">material options<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So what are the advantages and disadvantages of using this popular thermoplastic?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pros of using HDPE<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0Low cost<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Tough<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Good chemical resistance (a lot of chemicals are supplied in HDPE containers)<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Widely recycled<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Food grades available<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Can be heat welded (gas pipes)<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Doesn\u2019t leach into food and water, containers etc<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Rigidity<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cons of using HDPE<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0High thermal expansion<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Poor UV resistance (additives are available)<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Subject to stress cracking<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Difficult to bond (glues)<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Flammable<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Can look cheap<br \/>\u00b7\u00a0Poor temperature capability<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recycling HDPE<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One of the most-commonly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.becgroup.com\/blog\/green-glossary\/\">recycled plastics<\/a>, HDPE is used in milk bottles and pipes to shampoo bottles and shopping bags. In the UK, the majority of recycling facilities accept HDPE. Once collected, sorted, and cleaned, HDPE is melted down and cooled into pellets to be re-used.
