Customers approach BEC at different stages of the filter manufacturing process; some need to change moulders and have a filter and design<\/a> ready to go, others need assistance in material selection and some guiding through a design from start to finish. We are here to help at any and all stages, advising on design and material selection, prototyping with 3D printing<\/a>, tooling, and filter encapsulation.<\/p>\n

Our site in the South of the UK produces hundreds of thousands of filters for our clients every year. Customers often visit the factory to discuss current and new projects \u2013 allowing us to work closely together to design innovative new filters and ensure the quality of current production is up to scratch.<\/p>\n

\nFilters are chiefly used to protect part of a machine\u2013 be it a car engine, the heating element of a tumble dryer or the plumbing in your home. A robust filter keeps the machine working for longer.<\/p>\n

At BEC, we produce filters for air, oil, water, and solid materials. Using depth-media, non-woven, stainless steel, plastic and sintered meshes ranging from 10 micron to 2000 micron. These plastic encapsulated filtration devices are shipped around the globe, to the Czech Republic, USA, and Germany.<\/p>\n

\nInitially producing filters for household goods such as tumble driers and kettles over 40 years ago, BEC has since expanded into manufacturing filters for marine, automotive, domestic, and biomedical applications.<\/p>\n

How are BEC filters made?<\/h2>\n

Manufacturing a filter begins with a tool design<\/a> for the finished product. Once the mould tool has been produced, a filter mesh is loaded onto a metal core, the steel mould tool closes around it, plastic is injected into the tool and around the filter mesh, encapsulating it in a plastic moulding to create a support frame for the filter.<\/p>\n

Post-moulding most filters require some type of secondary operations, be that trimming of excess plastic around the filter, or the more complex ultrasonic welding. Ultrasonic welding involves joining two parts of a filter together through high-frequency vibrations and force. This produces a strong, tight seal without a visible seam.<\/p>\n

What materials are they made from?<\/h2>\n

Material selection is dependent upon the environment and material to be filtered- air permeability, the durability of the filter, and whether a filter can be cleaned or replaced all need to be taken into account when picking materials.<\/p>\n

BEC predominantly moulds filters in nylon, polypropylene or polyester due to their chemical stability in air, oil, and water. Depth-media, non-woven, stainless-steel, plastic and sintered meshes are used, ranging from 10 to 2000 microns.<\/p>\n

BEC manufactures filters using the following types of mesh\/ mesh coatings: acoustic mesh with measured RAYL values, splash and dust resistant meshes, flourcarbon based meshes, hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings, plasma surface treated mesh.<\/p>\n

Clamping<\/h4>\n

Before melted plastic can be injected into a mould, the two halves must be closed by a clamping unit. The clamping unit keeps the mould tightly shut when the plastic is injected into it under high pressure.<\/p>\n

Injection<\/h4>\n

Plastic pellets melted in the hopper above are then injected into the mould through a check valve, pushed by a rotating screw that is shunted by a hydraulic ram. This pushes the molten plastic into the mould tool.<\/p>\n

Cooling<\/h4>\n

Once the plastic has been injected into the mould, the plastic moulding cools down and sets \u2013 after it has fully cooled the plastic moulding can be ejected. Cooling time is often the most time-consuming part of the injection moulding process, varying depending upon the plastic used, wall thickness and if cooling channels are used.<\/p>\n

Ejection<\/h4>\n

Once the moulding has cooled, it is time to eject it from the mould tool. There are several ways to eject the part, using pins, blades, bars, sleeves or lifters. Most commonly ejector pins are used to force the part out of the mould tool.<\/p>\n

Inspection<\/h4>\n

Post-ejection the mouldings will need to be inspected to ensure their quality is good enough for the customer. An inspection will look for warping, weld lines, sink marks or flashing which can all indicate that the machine needs to be set slightly differently to produce better quality mouldings. Some mouldings will need to be trimmed or assembled into their final part after inspection.<\/p>\n

\nPlastic injection mould tools are key to producing plastic mouldings. Molten plastic is injected into the tightly shut mould tool to form into the shape of the finished part, it then cools and is ejected from the mould tool.<\/p>\n

Mould tools are produced from steel at BEC Group and are expertly made by one our skilled toolmakers to produce high quality mouldings fit for purpose.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/i> How are parts removed from an injection mould?<\/a><\/h3>
<\/p>\n

\nOnce an injection cycle is complete and the plastic part has cooled it can be removed from the injection moulding. This can be done manually; a machinist simply removes the part by hand and puts into a collection box. Parts can also be removed with an ejector system, this is usually done with ejector pins that put pressure on the moulding until it falls out, alternatively blade, sleeve, bar or lifters can be used to eject them.<\/p>\n
