Reshoring?\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Reshoring refers to the practice of bringing manufacturing operations that were previously outsourced to overseas locations back to the home country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This can involve relocating entire manufacturing operations or sourcing components and materials from domestic suppliers instead of those abroad.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are two main types of reshoring:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\r\n<li><strong>Direct reshoring<\/strong>: This involves physically relocating production capacity from overseas back to the UK.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\r\n<li><strong>Indirect reshoring<\/strong>: This occurs when a company decides to increase its domestic production capacity instead of investing in overseas facilities.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The end goal is similar: gain more control of your operations while improving quality, accelerating business cycles, and potentially even cutting costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The State of Reshoring Right Now\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/sci\/wmg\/research\/scip\/reports\/wmg_realities_of_reshoring_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey of 262 UK manufacturing companies<\/a> conducted by the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), 70% of respondents have engaged in some form of reshoring activity since 2008.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The study found that:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>52% of companies engaged in indirect reshoring, whilst 13% engaged in direct reshoring\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Over the last 9 years, there were 594 instances of indirect reshoring and 127 instances of direct reshoring\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Looking forward, 70% of respondents said they would consider direct reshoring, whilst 20% would consider indirect reshoring\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The WMG study also revealed that companies that engaged in reshoring reported <em>better business performance<\/em> than those that didn\u2019t reshore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons for Reshoring\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The decision to reshore is driven by a variety of factors, including:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The desire to be closer to customers (38% for direct reshoring, 37% for indirect)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Increased labour costs and transport costs associated with overseas manufacturing\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The need to reduce lead times and gain control over the production process\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Brexit-related bureaucratic issues and supply chain disruptions\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Geopolitical conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting supply chain fragility\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Essentially, reshoring means strengthening ties to a domestic company with which you can truly collaborate
